Well, I'm glad we're formally committed as a nation to stop gun violence one day annually. That should make everything better. ;)

The federal government said Thursday it has designated the first Friday of June each year as National Day Against Gun Violence.

Speaking at an event at the Toronto Raptors training centre in Toronto, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government is committed to reducing gun violence across the country and fostering a national discussion about the causes of the issue.

“Today we are here to give even more tools to Canadians to be able to raise awareness on the ravaging issue of gun violence,” he told an audience that included his government’s officials, anti-gun violence activists and representatives of the Toronto Raptors basketball team.

“It will be a day of remembrance and a time to recommit ourselves to building a Canada free of gun violence.”

Trudeau said the shooting which left a couple and an assailant dead over the weekend in Hamilton, Ont., was a “heartbreaking tragedy” and he called for an end to such attacks.

“This has got to stop,” he said.

Trudeau said his government has taken strong measures such as freezing the national market for handguns, extending background checks and increasing penalties to those committing gun-related offences, including smuggling.

“There are examples of what we are doing to reduce the amounts (of) firearms circulating in our streets,” he said.

Amazing...

This will shut off the flow of illegal guns coming in from the U.S.

Oh my goodness...I honestly never realized just how dumb & out of touch a person could actually be until this clown showed up. And representing us nonetheless!

National Day Against Gun Violence? Really? 🤦🏼‍♂️

Toronto seems to be doing something right... or they're just luckier this year ;)

Trudeau announces Day against Gun Violence amid 5-year-low in Toronto shooting incidents

Gun violence in Toronto trending in the right direction

Gun violence in Toronto is trending in the right direction with the number of shooting incidents at a five-year low, but police say there is still a long way to go.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Thursday that the first Friday of June every year will be the National Day against gun violence.

“It’ll be a day of remembrance and a time to recommit ourselves to building a Canada-free of gun violence,” said Trudeau as he met with gun safety advocates alongside Raptors President Masai Ujiri at the OVO centre.

“We’re all together in this,” said Ujiri. “I think sports brings people together, I think sports brings peace in an incredible way.”

It comes at a time when violence in Toronto is in the spotlight, but the number of shootings in the city is down significantly.

There have been 110 so far this year, compared to 166 at the same time last year, which represents a 33 per cent drop and a five-year low.

In the same five years, 2020 had the most shootings in the first six months of the year, with 176.

Toronto police tell CityNews that although incidents have been decreasing since 2019, and trending in the right direction, they still aren’t below pre-2015 levels and that’s a concern.

The Guns and Gangs task force said most shootings are targeted and isolated and they’re working with agencies at all levels to identify root causes as well as partner law enforcement agencies in Canada and the United States to interrupt the flow of guns coming over the border and to stop their trafficking within the GTA.

And getting guns off the street has become a priority for the federal government.

“Gun violence is something we must fight on many different fronts,” said Trudeau.

The Senate is reviewing a government bill that would ban assault-style firearms, a bill that’s being opposed by the Conservatives, saying it punishes law-abiding gun owners.

Toronto police Chief Myron Demkiw and other police services across the country are also working to advance bail reform related to gun crimes.

Clearly the Thug Brigade needs to tighten up it's musketry skills. Does violence calculate for shots fired, or just rounds on target?

Worst government and leadership in Canadian history. Go woke go broke.
Amen.

I feel like using the word worst is kind of selling them short...but there isn't another word that comes to mind.

Absolutely the worst, most out of touch, twisted, serially dishonest, useless dipshits life could possibly introduce to each other...it just boggles the mind.

(I kinda get the feeling they whisper "Hail Hydra..." to each other when they shake hands & do the bro hug thing...)
